Couple Rescued in Lake Ontario by Armed Forces

A Canadian Armed Forces helicopter and crew was called in to rescue a couple after their boat sank in Lake Ontario.

The pair sent out an alert when their vessel went down off Darlington Provincial Park in Durham just after 10 p.m. on Monday August 17th.

They’re being praised for doing everything right to aide in their rescue, including wearing life-jackets and shooting off a flare when the Griffin helicopter arrived.

First, they sent out a radio Mayday with their VHF radio which was heard by the rescue centre and the U.S. Coast Guard. They later sent out a 911 call when the boat was almost completely underwater and were about to abandoned ship. Later, the wife grabbed a Ziploc bag and placed their cell phone in the bag.

This allowed the rescue centre to call them back for an update on their condition.

The couple were taken to Oshawa Airport and then to hospital to be checked out. They were reportedly cold but otherwise fine.

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom.
