The Vikings Are Coming

It has been a thousand years or so since Leif Eriksen arrived in North America and landed at the northern tip of Newfoundland. This summer the Vikings will be back in the form of the Draken Expedition. These modern day Vikings are recreating the voyages of their ancestors in the largest Viking style vessel to be built in modern times. The Draken Harald Harfagre is following the traditional northern route via Iceland and Greenland before stopping in Newfoundland and then heading up the St. Lawrence.

Yet another solo sailor has been rescued by a commercial ship, this time a car carrier, after his yacht was rolled and holed during a storm in the South Pacific, some 1250nm north east of Auckland. As you may be aware, it is now mandatory to hold a recognised International Certificate of Competency (ICC) if you wish to charter a boat in certain European countries. It is generally required for the inland and coastal waters of Mediterranean countries. In Northern Europe and Scandinavia the ICC is generally not required, but it is strongly advised to check with any European or eastern bloc country that you wish to charter in before you leave.

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
