TELUS Van Isle 360 Yacht Race Gives Back

Today, Organizers of the TELUS Van Isle 360 Yacht Race announced that they will provide a $25,000 donation for the Queen Alexandra Foundation in support of Jeneece Place, a home away from home for children requiring medical treatment and their families.

Jeneece Place is the dream of 17 year old Jeneece Edroff, known to many as the Vancouver Island Penny Girl, who, with help from TELUS, raised more than $1.5 million to help children with special needs. Jeneece Place is currently under construction in Victoria next to the Victoria General Hospital and will be available to families of children, with special health needs, from around Vancouver Island who need to travel to Victoria for medical treatment.

"We are thrilled to be able to make this contribution to Jeneece Place," stated Wayne Gorrie, Founder of the TELUS Van Isle 360 Yacht Race. "We had been looking for a way to give back to all the communities who have helped us with the Van Isle 360 over the years, and this is just awesome. We hope this donation will help improve the lives of families from around Vancouver Island who find themselves in need of Jeneece Place."

The cheque will be presented to Jeneece Edroff by Wayne Gorrie of the TELUS Van Isle 360 and Mark Cloutier of Blast Performance Sailing, during the 'Kick Off Reception' for the race on Friday, June 3in Nanaimo, B.C.

The TELUS Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race is a 580 nm race circumnavigating Vancouver Island from June 4 – 18. The race is sailed in 10 legs and stops at 10 different host communities around the Island. This year's race is sold out and features 41 of the Pacific Northwests' top racing teams.

It's been a long time since Doug Hood, a member of the Port Credit Yacht Club in Mississauga (although Mississauga didn't even exist back then…) offered to dedicate a trophy for an offshore race rating based on a new rating. The year was 1955 and the trophy was named after his baby daughter Susan; the Susan Hood Trophy Race was born. Susan was at PCYC yesterday for a short visit and actually participated not too long ago.

Many of the trophies associated with this great event are older than the yachts and racers who line up on the start line; that is the beauty of sail boat racing.

Soaked crews made it back to PCYC after experiencing the full gamut of conditions in the 2011 Susan Hood Trophy Race. Many abandoned the race after hours of drifting near the Burlington Weather Mark; PCYC's Simon Hampson on Kawabonga explained when I saw him on the docks at 5:30 AM: 'Despite the light winds at the start, we still managed to get to within two miles of the Burlington mark in three hours, then we spent the next three hours drifting towards the mark in the slow current with no wind in the sails. We were still a half-mile away when we decided to turn on the engine and come back home. A bit frustrating but at least we were out on the water!'

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events

Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River in Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
